Thoughts On The Basilica del Santo Nino

The Basilica del Santo Nino is a pretty cool place and a must visit for Filipino Catholics and Catholics in general to visit. As you can see by the pic, its pretty old, 454 years old to be exact (yes Johan did do the math himself) and its very, very large the picture is but a small piece of the area.
Also this isn't really the entrance, its technically inside but outside as well (Sounds paradoxical but once you get there it makes sense) it actually leads into the main church area like any normal church but there are so many visitors that sometimes they use the "courtyard" outside to join the mass (and in special occasions it can even reach the streets). Then there's the outer church area, it has two layers: the ground and the higher area. The higher area is much more cooler because it has a bunch of statues behind the pews. And of course, the most important location of the Basilica is the cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan himself, this, my friends, literally the reason why people visit. It is history, it is the beginning of one of the most zealous Catholic societies in the world.

Other Notable Locations Include

  • The Museum
  • The really cool fish pond
The Basilica was formed around the miraculous surviving Child Jesus statuette when the village it was located in was burned to the ground by the conquering Spaniard people. The church began its construction during 1565 where it used to be made of simple nipa leaves and wooden boards. After managing to survive the whole Filipino rebellion, The Great War and World War 2 its materials were replaced by more sturdy stuff such as concrete and stone. After a few years during 2013 it had also managed to survive an earthquake.

This place is nothing short of a miracle, after surviving so many events its no wonder that people love to visit this glorious place, namely due to its famous locations and the history behind it. I haven't heard that it might get destroyed or something to make an SM Mall or whatever, but if it would happen I would be against it. Since this is an important heritage site that sets the history of Catholicism in the Philippines and is a hotspot for tourists and Filipinos from the other islands.
